Bree’s breathing was becoming more and more irregular as they approached the Rosecrest Mansion in Ryder’s silver Lexus. Could she really pretend to be some hoity-toity society chick? Strutting into this high-society party on Ryder Quinn’s arm and bidding on him during the auction?

They pulled through a circle drive, and Bree glimpsed the beautiful Spanish architecture with the warm yellow stucco exterior, clay roof tiles, and arched windows and doors. Her eyes widened as she saw a cluster of photographers loitering on the sidewalk, waiting for the next famous person to walk in. She gripped the hand rest. “I can’t do this,” she told Ryder.

He squeezed her hand, and warmth shot through her. “I’ll be right with you.”

“Yeah, that’s the problem,” she flung at him. “People are going to think we’re a couple.”

A valet opened her door and waited, but Ryder held on to her hand, his blue eyes searing into her. “Why’s that a problem?”

“You’re my boss,” she said, panic starting to overwhelm her.

“Bree,” his voice was low and much too appealing. “Could I be both? Your boss and your boyfriend?”

She blinked at him, not sure how to respond. This was all moving much too fast. “I don’t fit in your world,” she said.

Ryder’s warm smile washed over her. “That’s because you’re far too good for it.”

“Ma’am?” The valet was apparently tired of waiting and had his hand out for her. Bree was half-tempted to beg Ryder to drive out of there. Why had she agreed to come? She squared her shoulders and said a brief prayer. This was for children who were living through what she’d lived through. They were alone with no family, no money, no way to change their situation. She could do this. It was Ryder who would have to deal with the repercussions of having her on his arm. What was that about being her boss and her boyfriend? Wowza. She couldn’t let herself think about that right now. Later tonight, in bed, she’d stew over how huskily he’d said that. Maybe sometime she’d dredge up the courage to ask him about it.

Releasing Ryder’s hand, she placed her hand in the valet’s and let him help her from the vehicle. Ryder strode around the front of the car and wrapped his arm possessively around her waist.

Cameras were going nuts as reporters called out to him, “Mr. Quinn. Mr. Quinn!” They were asking if they were dating, asking where they met, asking who she was. Ryder simply gave them a broad smile and hurried her past the cameras and through the arched doorway into the mansion. Inside the doors, it was much quieter. The wide hallway had red tile floors and cream walls. Bree felt safe, especially with Ryder so close.

He kept his arm around her as they followed a few other people to a set of double doors on the right. Bree wanted to ask him to define the whole boss and boyfriend thing, but this was definitely not the moment. They entered the room, and a beautiful blonde in a silver dress was taking names and directing people to tables.
