CHAPTER 27

Suspicions

Philip hurried to Satina’s. He hadn’t talked to her since the night she’d been angry with her dad. After what he’d discovered in Satina’s yearbook, Philip hadn’t really been in the mood to talk, either, and he’d quickly but politely thanked them for the dinner and bath and returned to the castle. In his room he’d stood for a long time before the tall mirror as Blackhorn’s deep voice echoed in his thoughts:

They’re hardly visible. But if you look closely, you can see that your horns are beginning to show.

Philip had examined his head, but he couldn’t see any horns. Was that why it sometimes felt as if his skull was splitting in two?

But horns? He was a human. And humans didn’t grow horns.

You’re no longer an ordinary human, Philip, whispered a voice. You’re the Devil’s apprentice.

It turned out Satina wasn’t home. Philip knocked three times before giving up. Where was she? She’d told him yesternight that she would go straight home after school, and the final bell had rung long ago.

Well, he would try again later. The night was still young, after all.
