Bill of Lading

Traffic departments within the warehouse may also be responsible for drafting and printing Bills of Lading (BOL) and shipment manifests for outbound loads. They must also provide a delivery receipt or signatures for inbound loads. Figure 10-2 provides an illustration of a BOL. BOLs govern the shipment during transit and delivery from origin to destination. Critical shipment information is contained on the legal document and pertains to the shipper (consignor), receiver (consignee) and carrier. Freight class and description are contained on the BOL. Weight, cube, piece count, billing information, special instructions, declared value, COD charges, and contact numbers are contained on the BOL. Shippers and carriers sign the BOL to indicate acceptance of the freight in proper condition and possession of the freight. The BOL serves as a document delivery receipt, proof of ownership, and title of goods transfer document and is used to initiate freight bills, payment, and claims.
