Epilogue

Breathing in the scent of pine always brought a smile to Rebecca’s lips, but on this magical night, the scent reminded Rebecca yet again that she’d come home. Home to Gabriel. Home to the Lord.

At the end of the Reverend Carson’s touching service, Alicia switched off the overhead lights, leaving only the softly wavering candle flames on the altar to light the sanctuary. Instantly, Rebecca knew what it must have felt like that night in Bethlehem. A dark, cold night when the cry of a newborn babe had been all it took to warm the people’s hearts and souls, a cry that proclaimed a new beginning for everyone.

In the shadowy darkness, Rebecca rose with the choir to sing the last song of the Christmas Eve service. She looked at the sea of faces before her and felt a wealth of love and good fortune.

Gabriel, standing next to her, took her hand in his and gave her a reassuring squeeze. “You ready?”

“Yes, my love.”

Tears of pure joy pooled in her eyes as she flashed him a brilliant smile. It seemed her whole life had been about this moment. He picked Josh up. She tightened their family’s bond by taking Peter’s hand, and with the four of them linked together, they moved as one to the front of the choir. Together, as a family, they sang “Silent Night.” The singing was a gift Rebecca wanted to offer to the Lord for all He had given her. Gabriel’s deep voice complemented Peter’s and hers as they paid tribute to Christ. They finished the song with their voices blending as one, just as over the past months they’d blended as a family.

When the lights came on, washing the church in a rich brightness, everyone began filing out of the sanctuary. Gabriel didn’t release Rebecca’s hand. Instead he pulled her around so she stood in front of him, much as she had the day she had agreed to be his wife. He brushed a kiss across her forehead.

“Have I told you how much I love you today?” Gabriel asked, taking her other hand and holding them between their bodies.

She tilted her head and thought for a long moment. “Mmm—let me see. Nope, I don’t think so. And you haven’t missed one day since we married five months ago. My, Gabriel Stone, you seem to be slacking on the job.”

He pulled her closer, laughter deep in his eyes. “You didn’t hear me when you were waking up this morning.”

“So that’s what you were whispering into my ear. I had other things on my mind. You know me first thing in the morning.”

He smiled, the lines at the corners of his eyes deepening. “Yes, I do. You’re a touch grumpy, Rebecca Stone.”

“You would be, too, if you were carrying around an extra ten pounds.”

His eyes softened. He laid his hand on her rounded stomach. “You’re exceptionally beautiful in the morning—in the afternoon—in the evening.”

“You’re just saying that because I’m carrying your child.” His compliments never ceased to bring a full flush to her cheeks.
