Chapter 18
I am fortunate enough to be well acquainted with all of Polite Society. And I can tell you from experience . . . they are all dreadful.
âValencia, the Duchess of Dedham
Tru did not bite him. She could. She most certainly should, but she did not.
Her lips stilled, a small startled cry escaping into his mouth. He drank the sound and took full advantage. Kissing her and kissing her and kissing her until she couldnât feel her lips anymore. He kissed her top lip. Then her bottom. He alternated . . . and suddenly his tongue was there, licking over the seam of her lips until she parted for him, opening up so that he could thrust inside her mouth in a smooth, easy glide that turned the blood in her veins to molten lava.
She was grateful for the wall at her back and his body at her front because she would not be able to stand against such sensual assault.
This was hardly her first kiss, but it seemed like it. She felt a novice, and in matters of passion she supposed she was.
She could not even recall previous kisses, and that was telling enough. Chatham had kissed her. In the beginning. Truthfully, he had never devoted much time to the act of kissing once they were married. He had always skipped to the finale. Itâheâhad been underwhelming to say the least.
There had never been this. No long, deep, blistering kisses that she felt to her very toes. No fusing of lips and tongue, where her mouth became its own entityâsomething that existed outside of herself, that pulsed and lived with its own desperate need.
She had been touched by only one man in her life and that was long ago. So long ago she could not remember anything about it except the certainty that it had happened. It had happened and it meant nothing. It had been quick and empty. Void of emotion. Nothingness.
This was not nothingness.
This was pleasure. Unbelievable pleasure. All of it astonishingly . . . astonishing. That it was happening at all. That it felt . . . that it felt. That she felt.
She was bombarded by sensations. His mouth was scalding. His hands fierce where they gripped her. She felt consumed, devoured. Undone.
She bit his mouth . . . and she wasnât certain where the impulse originated. Was it a wild bid for freedom? Or something else wild? Something feral and primitive that throbbed at her core?
He pulled back with a curse. Touching his lip gingerly, he glared at her with darkly brutal eyes.
Her breath fell in noisy blasts of air between them.
It was a fraught moment. She knew what she should do next.
She had bit himâstopped him. Now she should turn and flee from this wretched man who had kissed her as though it was his right. She should tell her husbandâput an end to this and save her daughter in the process.
He had kissed her. Her chest lifted on another ragged breath. No man had dared such liberties with her before.
