Evening Dining

All of the above-mentioned restaurants provide evening meals as well as lunch, and all of them are "licensed" which means they have a reasonable range of beer, wine, and spirits. Some of them like Tere's Bar and Grill and Metua's in Avarua are informal, small and inexpensive. Those listed below are somewhat more formal.

Brandi's Restaurant - In the Rarotongan Hotel, this is probably the most elegant international restaurant on the island. Most choices are a la carte and good. It's the sort of place you'd go to in San Francisco, London, or Sydney. Dinner with wine for two will come to about $24.

The Outrigger - Steaks here are good, especially the pepper steak, but the seafood plate, a thing of beauty, features locally gathered oysters, mussels, mahi mahi, and a diced raw fish marinated in coconut sauce called ika-mata. With either selection, forego the salad and order the vegetable plate. Dinner for two with wine will be about $24. Reservations are recommended.

The Vaima - This restaurant, overlooking the lagoon and near the Rarotongan Hotel, is good too. Much like The Outrigger with similar prices.
