Chapter 22
The Grandfather struck midnight.
Lizzy was sitting up in bed, gazing out the windows of their bedroom, a shawl wrapped around her shoulders and her nightgown decorated with all the lace the seamstress had managed to sew for her. It was one of those nights when she had awoken and when she heard the chimes of the Grandfather clock downstairs, she had risen and glanced over towards the sleeping figure of her husband. When the chimes of the clock woke her, Lizzy had decided to take some time to be alone with herself away from her husband for a while. She knew that he would be on work the following morning but she also didnât wish to bother his peace from what he had been asked from that patient from the day before.
âStrange that he asked him about Oliver,â Lizzy thought as she made her eyes return to gaze out of the window. Winter was still upon the manor but Lizzy knew that spring would be showing signs of its appearance and she was preparing herself for it. The season of spring always brought it joys and excitements but Lizzy also loved the feeling of winter and how it brought with it its surprises. As an example, as she stood up to take a closer look at the falling snowflakes, Lizzy heard a familiar sound coming from one of the trees outside.
An owl had hooted in the night and Lizzy always loved it when the bird did that and she enjoyed hearing his cry more than the horseâs neighs. She also loved hearing his voice cry more than them because of the accident which had occurred a few weeks before and she didnât have any frame of mind to remember that. It was in this moment when she was facing the glass windows. The falling snowflakes were there and they seemed to be dancing before her, like dancers on a stage, presenting to her their hard work of their accomplishment and they wished to let Lizzy see how they were going to entertain her with their dances. Seeing this, she smiled and she drew the shawl in more and she remembered feeling that Fitzwilliamtmas feeling of being a child and she remembered those times.
Her heart was touched when she heard the echoing gong of the Grandfather clock downstairs and she glanced over her shoulder when she heard a mumble,
âAh, mama! Donât bother me now!â
She smiled when she watched as her husband, turned over to his right, and even in the evening light, she could tell that he frowned and his hand reached out. Seeing this, she hurriedly made her way back to the bed and when she reached out and touched his hands, his fingers gently wrapped themselves around her and she smiled more when she heard him whisper,
âOh, thank goodness!â
She shook her head when her smile widened when she watched him return to his sleep.

The following morning, the morningâs sunrays met Fitzwilliam. He blinked when he glanced over and
