It’s Okay to Accessorize

Layering is the first step to dressing for the outdoors. But it’s not the only one. You still need to cover your hands, feet, and especially your head—all of which tend to suffer first when the temperature drops. Here’s what else you should wear from head to toe.

Head Gear

Pack a wool or fleece hat for any day-hike or backpacking trip in any season—even in July. That’s because no other piece of clothing provides more essential warmth for its size. Plus, a hat is a simple way to regulate your body temperature on the trail. Cold sleepers and winter campers should also consider a balaclava—a wrap that completely covers the head and neck—to ward off the overnight chill.
