Folate along with vitamin B12 helps provide correct duplication of DNA. Cancer involves DNA that has “gone awry”—lacking the ability for our cells to replicate correctly and then die at the appropriate time. Studies have found that low folate conditions can trigger “brittle” DNA that fuels cancer metastasis.20
Folate is essential in the synthesis and methlylation of (introduction of the methyl group into) DNA. Low levels of folate may increase the rate of DNA mutations, damage, and replication errors.21
The Nurses’ Health Study review of 88,756 women between 1980 and 1984 found that women who had a folate intake of more than 400 mcg (micrograms) daily were less likely to be diagnosed with colon cancer during the study than those who consumed less than 200 mcg daily. Those who took daily multivitamins containing folate for more than fifteen years were 75 percent less likely to develop colon cancer than women who did not use supplements.22
Without optimal amounts of folate within the cells, growth is erratic and prone to errors, such as found in cancer cells. People with low B12 and folic acid status present a clinical picture that looks like leukemia.23 Patrick Quillin, nutritionist and author of Beating Cancer with Nutrition, says, “Without adequate folate in the diet, cell growth is like a drunk driver heading down the highway—more likely to do some harm than not.”24 Alcohol is a known folate antagonist, and consumption of alcohol reduces folate’s availability.
News about Folic Acid
Research has found that folic acid does not interfere with the effects of the chemotherapy drug methotrexate as once thought; therefore, you can take folic acid.25
Supplements
Folinic acid is the most active form of folic acid; the recommended dose is 400 mcg per day. I recommend that folic acid be taken as part of a B-vitamin complex, unless otherwise prescribed by your healthcare professional. A high-quality, vitamin-mineral supplement should have adequate amounts of folic acid.
Plant Foods Rich in Folic Acid
Folic acid takes its name from the Latin word folium, which means “foliage.” No doubt this is due to its high concentration in dark leafy green vegetables (like spinach and kale) and beet and mustard greens. However, folic acid is actually found in highest concentration in brewer’s yeast and legumes such as black-eyed peas, beans, lentils, and split peas. Asparagus and broccoli are also good sources of folate along with nuts, especially walnuts and filberts.
GREEN TEA
Green tea originates from an evergreen shrub known as Camellia sinensis, from which young leaves are lightly steamed to produce green tea. The powerful antioxidant flavonoids, known as the polyphenols, remain in green tea due to the steaming process. Not only do these polyphenols act as antioxidants, they may also increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the small intestine, liver, and lungs. Epidemiological studies indicate that cancer rates are lower in Japan than the United States, believed to be in part due to the traditional three cups or more of green tea the Japanese drink daily.26
Research indicates the following benefits from green tea:
