The Room Where It Happens (Door’s Open)

Librarians don’t typically have much background in neighborhood land use. It’s a big, specialized field and is the domain of planners, architects, engineers, and designers. Like any specialized field, it has a daunting atmosphere of opaque language and casually employed acronyms. Ministerial review, easement, level of service, form-based code, BIDs, FARs, EIRs, and VMT, anyone?

It won’t be an area of expertise for most librarians but needn’t be and, in any case, some comfort with the subject is easy to achieve. A first step is getting some exposure to the field. If you’re lucky, there may be advocacy groups in your area that train on the process. The organization Circulate San Diego, for example, produces training material on the planning process and how to get involved in local government. It has led “Join Your Community Planning Group” training workshops for citizens interested in participating, including one hosted at the Linda Vista branch of San Diego Public Library in 2017.
