7.3 Didymoeca costata
7.3.1 Nomenclature
Unfortunately the nomenclature of Didymoeca costata has a chequered history and since this species has made such an important contribution to our understanding of the tectiform condition it is essential to clarify its current taxonomic status. Didymoeca costata (Valkanov) Doweld is better known as Diplotheca costata Valkanov (1970) (see Jackson and Leadbeater, 1991). However, the name Diplotheca Valkanov 1970 has at least five different homonyms: while it is undesirable to have different taxa denoted by the same generic name, nevertheless according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) it is only the names of other animal taxa that are treated as homonyms for the purpose of zoological nomenclature. Since both Diplotheca Matthew 1885 (Mollusca) and Diplotheca Valkanov 1970 (Choanoflagellatea) are subject to the zoological code, the junior homonym must be rejected and a new substitute name established in its place.
Doweld (2003) established the genus Didymoeca as a substitute name for Diplotheca but unfortunately the information with an erroneous title was published in an obscure Russian journal (see Doweld, 2003) and so was completely overlooked by protistologists elsewhere. To complicate the matter further, Özdikimen (2009), unaware of the substitute name published by Doweld, also created the replacement name Volkanus. Regrettably the name Volkanus costatus (Valkanov) Özdikimen has been used recently in a publication by Leadbeater (2010). Now that Doweld’s (2003) substitute name Didymoeca has come to light and takes precedence over Volkanus, the latter name must be considered invalid. This is not quite the end of the story, for Doweld (2003) included Didymoeca within the Craspedophyceae Christensen (1962), which was a class of algae originally erected by Chadefaud (1960) as the Craspédophycinées following Bourrelly’s (1957) decision to include the choanoflagellates as an order (Craspémonadales) within the Chrysophyceae (see Section 1.8.2). Currently there are two other species of Didymoeca, namely D. elongata (Nitsche and Arndt, 2008) and D. tricyclica (Bergesch et al., 2008).
