Powders are created in two different ways. The first way is by pulverizing the bulk individual herbs or herb formula. The second way is by decocting, concentrating, and spray-drying the individual herb or formula and creating dry granules. Powders or granules are commonly swallowed with warm water either as a powder or in capsules. Sometimes the powders or granules are placed into boiling water in a Thermos and steeped overnight to create a tea. Practitioners may either put together individual formulas from single granulated herbs, or they may order and prescribe granules of prepared formulas. Often, a prepared formula is used as a base and individualized with single herbs.
Pills in the form of Chinese herbal tablets and capsules almost always contain herbal formulas rather than individual herbs, and they are targeted to treat specific disharmonies. There are different types of herbal pills. Some are made from powders, and others are made from concentrates. Practitioners and clients often favor pills over bulk herbs because they are less expensive and easier to use; they are formulated for specific disharmonies; they may have a more concentrated pharmacological effect; and they provide access to otherwise rare or expensive herbs.
Syrups are prepared by reducing herbs to a thick concentrate. Granulated sugar or honey is added, and the syrups are then ingested orally.
Plasters are made by preparing herbs in oil along with other substances. The resulting salve is spread over a cloth that is used as a compress or plaster or directly applied to the skin or orifice.
Pellets or special pills are usually made from extremely rare medicinals. They are super-refined into a fine powder that is mixed with a gluey substance. Pellets are used internally and externally.
Medicinal wines are therapeutic beverages made by soaking or simmering herbs in wine.
Tinctures or extracts are drinks or topical formulas made by steeping herbs in alcohol or glycerin.
Enemas are made from easily dissolved herbs or cooked teas and used to remedy digestive problems along with other internal conditions.
With the advent of modern manufacturing processes in China, in the tradition that everything always changes, new processes for manufacturing are continually being developed and used.
