Three

They remained at Sinclair for almost another week. Julia and Alasdair moved back into the castle, and Julia stayed each night with Rod in the Red Tower Room, not being secretive about it, though she knew Janet did not approve of this arrangement. Stacia had taken the news with a shrug of her shoulders. ‘So what’s new? I knew all along he wanted you. You’re a big step up in the world for him, Mrs. Sinclair.’

‘I love him, Stacia.’

‘That’s fine. That’s a plus, at any rate.’

Julia telephoned the news to her father, Luisa, and to Connie. To Alex she sent a cable. The reaction from her father was somewhat puzzled. ‘Are you sure, my darling? I mean … it’ll mean living in Hollywood with all the razzmatazz. Well, I shouldn’t be a mealy-mouthed old man, begrudging you your chance of happiness. So long as you love him. I do confess I’ve wondered what the rest of your life would be like living up there in the wilderness. You’re so young, Julia. There’s so much ahead of you. I was afraid you’d end up like so many young war-widows ‒ a widow forever. It’s just your choice of a husband that’s startled me. But … so what? If he’s your choice, then he must be good. He just struck me as one of your run-of-the-mill film stars, for all he’s famous. But then, that’s a judgement based on only one meeting ‒ which isn’t fair.’

‘He’s been kind … and tender, Father. After Jamie … well, I suppose I became rather choosy. He’s very different from Jamie. But I can’t build my life on a ghost. Nor give Alasdair a father who isn’t here.’

‘I understand, my darling. So long as he truly loves you … takes care of you. And makes you happy.’

‘I hope I make him happy, Father. He could use a bit of happiness. His life’s been rather short on that.’

Luisa purred over the news. ‘Darling, Julia, this is wonderful! We worried so much over you. So young to be alone. Now you must leave all the arrangements to me. We’ll have the reception here at Anscombe, I think. So much more home-like than a London hotel. I think you had better be married at the registry office in Brighton, and just be here to greet the guests. How we will cope with the press, I’m not quite sure, but we’ll work out something. Can you give me a few weeks? I’ll do the invitations. If Rod wants friends over from Hollywood, it would just give them time to get here if he sent cables. Yes, I think it should be Anscombe. The press will be anxious to see that this marriage has your father’s approval. If we have it here at Anscombe, it is really “at home”. Thank heaven they have finished the conversion of the stable block into guest rooms. Connie and Ken and the children will want to stay. And I’m sure Alex and Elliot will try to be here.
