Angie,
Thanks for your work in creating the new training workbook. You had to pull together creative people, got permission for the content, worked well with the outside copy center folks, and were able to meet a very tough deadline—getting it to the client on time. Without those materials, and without the quality you brought to the project, there would have been no workshop. I can always count on you to take ownership and keep our clients top of mind. Thanks again!
Chester
What did we learn here other than that Chester is better at writing thank-you notes? The first note is ineffective not because of its brevity, but because it shows a distinct lack of knowledge of the employee and his value. Underline this: General praise has no impact.
One last note on specificity. Day-to-day recognition does not have to relate to your core goals as a team or organization. This type of praise and recognition may reward something as simple as extra effort, a job well done, a smart idea, great service, or a team success.
Make It Timely
Day-to-day recognition should be timely to the action. After all, that’s the whole point of calling it “day-to-day.” It’s frustrating for people when they do something great and hear no praise. To be recognized days, weeks, or even a month later is of some reward, but in 99 percent of cases, a manager who puts it off will forget it. If we want to reinforce the right behaviors, we must reward them in a timely fashion.
If you need an illustration of this principle, try missing your spouse’s birthday by a day. What’s the reaction? In our experience, we’ve found it’s difficult to get a good night’s sleep on the couch. It’s equally difficult to get the best effort out of an employee who feels overlooked. Timeliness communicates we are paying attention and that our team members are eminently valuable and necessary to our team’s success.
