Chapter Twelve

“How the hell should I know why Devon Barnes is dead?” A cuffed up Ennis Powell sat on the other side of the long table in the desolate, gray room.

The prison guard stood by the locked door with his hands clasped in front of him.

Lisa and Winston stared at Ennis from across the table.

“I don’t know what you want me to say.” Ennis laid his pale, tattooed arms on the table. “All I know is that Devon is dead.” His black goatee wiggled when he smirked. “And that they think you killed him.” He gestured to Lisa. “Kinda fitting isn’t it? I mean you’re the reason I’m in here for life and you might end up knowing what this feels like too.”

“The difference is that I’m innocent and you weren’t.”

“How do we know you’re innocent?” Ennis sat back. “On the news, they said your prints were on the knife, and your name and number was in his phone.” He stroked his goatee. “I don’t know about you, Detective Swanson, but this doesn’t look too good to me.”

“We don’t care what looks good to you,” Winston said. “When we want your opinion or approval, then we’ll give it to you.”

Ennis’s smirk disappeared.

“Now we’re not here to be your entertainment,” Winston continued. “We want to know whatever you know about what’s going on. And we want to know now.”

“Why the fuck you think I know?” Ennis dropped his arms from the table. “Oh wait a damn minute here. Are you trying to say I had something to do with Devon’s murder?”

Lisa shrugged.

“Hello.” He tugged at his T-shirt. “I’m in prison in case you forgot. How am I going to kill a man while I’m in prison?”

“Don’t act stupid with us,” Lisa said. “There are many ways you can kill someone while you’re in here. Inmates do it all the time.”

“Oh, so you’re saying I had someone kill Barnes, then set you up?” Ennis clasped his hands on the table. “Why on earth would I do that, Detective?”

“To get back at me.” Lisa laid her hand on the table. “And we know that Barnes beat up your sister back in the day. She almost died from her injuries from what we hear and to add insult to injury…the charges were dropped against Barnes.” She scoffed. “Now are you telling me that didn’t make you mad? It didn’t make you want revenge on the man that hurt your sister?”

“My sister is dead,” Ennis said. “So I’d appreciate you not using her as a way to put this shit on me.”

“We didn’t know she was dead,” Winston said. “We’re sorry for the loss but the fact that you knew Barnes and you hate Lisa is too much of a coincidence.”

“The last thing on my mind is getting revenge.” Ennis scratched his chest. “I don’t waste my time on negativity anymore.” He looked at the ceiling. “I answer to a higher power now. Prison has taught me to admit my sins and move on.”

Winston and Lisa exchanged glances.
