Chapter Fifteen

Tessa stood at the window that overlooked the courtyard and watched the stream of departing carriages. The ball was over. The servants would be cleaning up. She'd heard Sally and the dowager pass her door some time ago. She really ought to undress and go to bed.

Wait up for me. Perhaps there was some business he wished to discuss. Perhaps he wanted to talk to her about Mrs. Chalmers. She could hardly object if he kept a mistress. She wasn't a real wife, and this wasn't a real marriage.

She touched her fingers to her lips, remembering the pressure of his mouth on hers. She didn't know what she was feeling, what she was thinking.

When someone knocked at the door, she bit down on her lip. After taking a moment to compose herself, she crossed to the door and opened it. It was only a footman.

"This letter arrived for you, m'lady," he said.

"A letter? At this time of night?" She took the letter from the silver tray the footman extended to her.

"It was delivered by hand," he replied.

She wasn't interested in the letter. "Has… has his lordship come up yet?"

"I believe he's in the library, ma'am."

She nodded and quietly shut the door. She didn't know who could be writing to her at this time of night, but with nothing better to do while she waited for Ross, she sat beside the candle, broke the seal, and spread out the one-page epistle.

There was no date, no salutation, and no signature. It took her only a moment to scan the message, and in that moment, her whole body began to tremble.
