Chapter Eleven

Hildy ate Esmeralda Gray’s delectable cevapcici, which she learned were small meat rolls seasoned with paprika and garlic. Drank dark Russian tea laced with lemon and sugar in a sitting room that looked to her like one in a high-class bawdy house would. She was captivated by the entire afternoon, entertained with stories about Tobias and his escapades growing up while watching his cheeks pinken as he recuperated, the traditional food and drink reviving him. He laughed easily and often with his aunt, his gaze never straying from Hildy for long, his hat placed strategically on his lap to hide evidence of his desire.

As he’d promised, soulful conversation and tea in the least of godless places.

The façade he’d constructed to protect himself was being chipped away, exposing the true man beneath. A process he allowed. That he’d offered this revelation to her and not his intended was startling and inexplicably wonderful.

And a nightmare because he wasn’t hers.

Nonetheless, hungrily, Hildy seized the seconds, recording the aroma of cardamon and citrus scenting the air; the splash of color on the floor, the walls; the feel of raw knotted silk beneath her fingertips. Vases and statuettes and ornamental gewgaws scattered about like pebbles on the shore. A vivid crimson door that opened to another world.

Tobias Streeter’s world was unlike any she’d ever visited or imagined.

And his words…

His carnal suggestions circled her mind, closing in with sharp teeth until she tripped over her words, finally giving up and letting the others carry the conversation. Only Zelda recognized this was not the norm.

Then I’d caress you until you begged me to stop, drop to my knees before you, and make you come with my mouth.

As his carriage bumped along the gravel thoroughfare on their return to London, these erotic statements moved through her like a summer squall, sweeping away the chill until Hildy felt as exposed as Tobias had let himself be this day. Her tattered gloves offered no protection. Neither did her years-out-of-date woolen cloak or the lap blanket Tommy Dogs had handed her when she climbed inside. Her skin tingled beneath her many layers as if Tobias had trailed his fingers across her body, just as he’d suggested he’d like to. The area between her thighs lit up, a sudden melting sensation.

An area he’d let her know he wanted to explore.

With his fingers. His lips. His tongue.

“Your ring, luv. You’re never without it.”

Torn from her musings, Hildy glanced to the bench seat across from her, realizing she was spinning her ring beneath her glove, a senseless habit. Tobias was sprawled in the corner of the handsome carriage, his hat lying on the velvet squab beside him, no longer a necessity to have in his lap. She shifted, squeezing her thighs together and praying he didn’t notice.

What could she do to make him have to use his hat as cover again?

“The ring,” he whispered, his gaze dusting Zelda, who dozed beside Hildy. At some point during the visit, he’d put on his spectacles, another chink in the armor set to protect her against his charms.
