Chapter 7: Collection Time

Camilla

A few claps and hoots from the grooms working in the livery made Camilla realize they were no longer alone.

Schmidt leaped to his feet. “You heard her, gents. The lady said yes!”

So much for decorum! She found herself caught up tightly in the arms of her affianced, being twirled around and around until she was dizzy.

So many happy congratulations were rained down on their ears, and Camilla was so busy laughing and crying with joy, that she forgave Schmidt on the spot for proposing to her in a livery. It was so like him to get caught up in the moment without a care as to where they were standing. He was impulsive yet genuine. It was one of the things she loved so much about him.

Before she could catch her breath or her scattered emotions, he was tossing her into the driver’s seat, leaping up beside her, and guiding his new carriage and a team of four horses from the livery.

She leaned in to wrap both hands around his arm, adoring the way his muscles rippled beneath her fingers as he drove his team. “Where are you taking me?”

He cast a sideways glance at her. “I’ll give you one guess.” He set their direction for the south part of town.

At first, she thought they were returning to the Silverpines Finishing School for Young Ladies, but he took them a little farther west than that before bringing his horses to a halt. From what she could determine, they were in the middle of nowhere. There were no more town buildings in sight. There were no buildings in sight, whatsoever. Nothing but acre after acre of countryside stretched before them. There was a big wide open clearing, surrounded by thick wooded areas. Plus, she could hear the trickle of a creek nearby.

She twisted in her seat to face Schmidt. “What is this place?”

“Ours,” he declared with pride.

“Ours?” she breathed, gripping his arm more tightly. “You mean you finally bought that piece of land you’re forever talking about?”

“I did. I bought two pieces of land, to be precise. This one is roughly a hundred and sixteen acres. I’m going to build you a house out here on the exact spot you tell me you want it. The other lot is much smaller. It’s up on Redfern, just past the theater. That’s where Boone and I will construct our detective agency.”

She launched herself at him, raining kisses all over his face.

He pretended to cringe in mortification and hold her off. “But Ms. Powers! Someone might see us, and you, of all people, have a reputation to maintain. You said so yourself.”

She gurgled out a laugh and gave one errant lock of his hair a none-too-gentle tug.

His last shred of control seemed to vanish, and he hauled her into his lap.

“Schmidt!” she protested, blushing up a storm.

He silenced her protest with his mouth. “I’ve wanted to do this all morning,” he growled between kisses.

“Even while you were supposed to be listening to the pastor’s sermon?” she squeaked.
