The process demonstrates one of many ways in which “Japanese” yōkai come into being. It turns out that a seemingly indigenous monster may have originated with a Persian illustration of Alexander the Great! Interestingly, many scholars have focused on how Alexander’s travels introduced monsters and “marvels of the East” into the Hellenistic world and the Western imagination.79 The talking or laughing heads of the ninmenju tell us that such monstrous influences went both ways. Even in so-called premodern times, there were global connections through which legends and imagery were transmitted and transformed across time, language, continents, and cultures.
