152. Hallbjorn

Hallbjorn, son of Odd of Kidjaberg, son of Hallkel who was the brother of Ketilbjorn the Old, married Hallgerd, (Tongue-Odd's-daughter). They stayed the first winter with Odd, and was also there at the time. There was no love lost between husband and wife. In the spring at Removal Days57 Hallbjorn got ready to leave, and while he was making his preparations, Odd set out from home over to the baths at Reykholt, where his sheep sheds were. He didn't want to be around when Hallbjorn left because he was afraid that Hallgerd wouldn't go with him. Odd had always tried to put things right between husband and wife.

When Hallbjorn had saddled their horses, he came back into Hall-gerd's room where she was sitting on the dais, combing herself. Her hair flowed round her body right down to the floor; she had the finest hair of all the women in Iceland, apart from Hallgerd Twist-Breeks. Hallbjorn told her to get up and come along, but she sat still and didn't say a word. Then he gave her a pull, but didn't budge her. This happened three times. Hallbjorn stood in front of her and said:

The linen-clad lady

loves making a fool of me

this is what turns

my face away from her.

Saddened forever

by the sorrow she's caused me;

grief makes me pale,

pain grips the heart's root.
