Fasting

In Chinese medicine, food is used to heal. Eating high-quality foods is the best path to cleansing and healing; people with immune-compromised conditions are usually too weak to fast. But as you get stronger and healthier and want to cleanse very deliberately, you might try a modified fast. Maybe one day a week or twice a month, drink and eat only the cultured foods on The Diet. Fasting gives the digestive tract a chance to rest.

Later in your healing, you can modify your pattern again, such as by drinking water and lemon juice throughout the day, and eating only a light vegetable meal in the afternoon. Once you are able to tolerate grapefruit, you can use it like lemons and lemon juice. A day when you drink only warm How to Care for Your Colon vegetable broth (called “pot liquor” in the South) makes an ideal modified fast.

You can also fast on milk kefir diluted with water for a day. The Russians and Turks do this all the time, and it is a famous cure in Russian health sanitariums.

Milk by nature is dehydrating, so adding water makes it more balanced and medicinal. In ancient Ayurvedic texts you will find this kefir/water mixture mentioned as a cure for many digestive problems. They refer to it as “curd water.”

TIP: Fast only on days when you can also rest, such as the weekend, to give your body the full advantage of the cleansing process.
