âSophieâs nameâs not in the system, so I take it you didnât log it?â she asked.
Drummond shook his head. He and Saunders looked a lot more sheepish than they had done less than a fortnight ago, when theyâd first reported seeing Fraser and Sophie in the car park. Now Saundersâ scrappy moustache was turned downwards in a mopey triangle. Erin probably wasnât his favourite detective after sheâd asked to speak to Tom. You owe me, the expression in his eyes seemed to say.
âIs there any other way someone could have found out about the argument you saw? Did you call someone about it? Did you talk to anyone in the office?â
âI donât think so,â he said.
Erin didnât buy that. Theyâd said something and they knew it.
âWe have no evidence of a previous connection between DCI Radley and Sophie Madson. Right now, weâre in the dark. Anything you know could make a difference.â
They exchanged a nervous glance.
âWell, we did mention it once,â said Saunders. âJust in passing in the office.â
âI really donât see how it could be relevant though,â Drummond added.
âWhat made you bring it up?â
They looked at her guiltily. It took Erin a few seconds to get it, and when she did she had to resist rolling her eyes.
âIt was dark and she had lots of make-up on,â said Drummond apologetically. âI didnât know she was sixteen. I thought she was about twenty.â
âSo you mentioned to the guys that youâd seen this good-looking girl out?â
âNo, no, it wasnât like that. You know Walker?â
The hair on her arms prickled. She nodded.
âHe was â wellâ¦â He gave her a guilty look. âItâs a bit awkward. Itâs just lads, you know.â
âIâve been here long enough. Trust me, Iâve heard it all.â
âWell, he was showing everyone in the office photos of this woman heâd just interviewed,â he said, âand he went round everyone, asking them who theyâd come across on jobs, getting these girlsâ profiles up. And you know, telling them whether they had good taste or not.â
She could imagine this clear as day. Sheâd seen Walker do it before. Making a big performance out of the fact he hadnât lost his virility or whatever, as if anyone would go for a crumbling relic like him.
âItâs not like I was really into it,â Drummond added. âItâs more that heâs senior. You want to be on his good side.â
âSo you brought up Sophie?â
âI couldnât remember her full name. Just Sophie. Thank God. Can you imagine? Heâd have got her profile up and weâd have seen she was still in school. Iâd have looked like a complete creep.â
âBut you said youâd seen this pretty gymnast arguing with her coach? You described her?â
He nodded.
âI donât think that would have been enough â if it is DCI Radleyâ¦â
âCan you remember who was there when this happened?â
âEveryone, it felt like. Lots of uniforms. I think yourself and Adlington were on the other table and Radley on another. Iâd say he was within earshot.â
She went in search of Walker first thing the next day.
