CHAPTER 12

Alia gasped when Dru’s firm lips touched hers. Not that she didn’t want him to kiss her. How many times during the last few days had the memory of their roadside kiss made her flush with embarrassment and want? Her pulse quickened at the tenderness in his kiss. The heated blood rushing through her veins surprised and thrilled her. If kissing was this good, she wanted more.

But with Dru Kassandros―the Hollywood bigwig who was here to buy her production technology?

Her eyes flew open. She leaned away.

“What’s the matter?” A frown pressed between Dru’s smooth brows, and he stared into her eyes.

“I have to go.” She turned away and placed her hand on the door handle.

“Alia, wait.” The urgency in his voice made her still. “Something just happened. I’d like to know what it is. I thought you had enjoyed the evening.”

“I did.” She looked at him over her shoulder. Herein lay the problem. “And for that, I thank you.”

She had a wonderful evening―an evening where she dropped her guard and forgot why Dru Kassandros was really here. Granted, she’d made the mistake of parading him in front of her family as her boyfriend. She cringed realizing the error she made. Why did her family have to like Dru?

Why did she have to like him?

“Then tell me what happened? I have a right to know that.” His voice was soft but firm.

“You know why,” she said and winced at the quiver in her voice. “This is all a farce.”

“What’s a farce?” Confusion darkened his eyes. “That kiss? Is that how you see what’s happening between us? Maybe that kiss was a total farce for you, but it felt pretty real to me.”

“We are dating because we signed a contract.” Alia clasped her hands together to keep them from trembling.

“We signed a contract for me to be your boyfriend at family functions.” He sounded calmer though his eyes blazed. “Tonight was not a family function.”

“No, but …” Now she was really confused. “Then why did you ask me out?”

“Maybe because I wanted to be with you?” He lifted his brows. “Maybe because I enjoy your company? You want to know what I like about you? Everything!”

That gave her a jolt. Did he understand what he was saying?

She was so confused.

“That’s a little vague,” she said weakly. When his eyes flared, she wished she hadn’t said anything.

“You’re right,” he said and drew a breath. “This list is long, but how about this for starters. Your eyes―the way they flash when you’re determined to win.”

She flushed deeply and sunk low in the car seat.

“Your laugh, which is pure music.” His voice softened. “The knit between your brows when you’re solving a problem. The way you move is pure grace. The heightened color in your cheeks when someone tells you how wonderful you are.”

She closed her eyes. Dru was in New York because he wanted something. Why did she want to believe he liked her for who she was?

“I’ll stop there,” he said and released a slow breath.
