COMMAS TO SET OFF YEAR

A date written in the order month-day-year sets off the year with commas. It’s a common mistake to omit the second comma.

Right: The meeting scheduled for June 20, 2015, has been canceled.

Wrong: The meeting scheduled for June 20, 2015 has been canceled.

However, the final comma is replaced by a period, a question mark, an exclamation point, or a semicolon when the date comes at the end of a sentence or before a semicolon.

The meeting was scheduled for June 20, 2015.

Can we reschedule for June 27, 2015?

Alternate dates include June 27, 2015; July 7, 2015; and July 11, 2015.
