According to the American Heart Association, fat and cholesterol should not be restricted in the diets of children under age two. Babies and toddlers require more fat in their diets than older children and adults, and cholesterol is essential for babies’ growth. Children from one to two years old should be given whole milk and whole-milk products, which contain the necessary amount of cholesterol for this age group. (In fact, breast milk has more cholesterol than whole cow’s milk.)

It’s important to note that high levels of saturated fat in an adult’s diet can cause elevated cholesterol, which may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attack, and stroke. Because of this, health experts regularly encourage adults to limit their intake of dietary cholesterol and saturated fat.

The family’s best insurance against consuming too much cholesterol and saturated fat is to eat a balanced diet rich in grains, vegetables, and fruit. Some lean meat, poultry, or fish, alternating or combined with legumes and low or nonfat dairy products, will give adults and children over two all the fat and cholesterol they need.

OFFER WHOLE MILK WITH MEALS

Some mothers may choose to continue breast-feeding. For those who don’t, begin serving 1/4 to 1/2 cup (60 to 120 ml) of whole milk with meals. You can decide how much milk to serve with each meal or snack, as long as your toddler gets at least 2 cups (475 ml) of whole milk every day.
