Chapter 11

The poem. . . Like Olivia, he wondered how it was meant to end but the answer was beyond him. And the fiery intensity of his need for her burned through him, eradicating reason. It shocked him to his core.

Duncan could not recall ever feeling such desire.

It coursed through his veins like liquid flames.

All he wanted was to seize her to him, take her body there in that room with all the artifacts about him, and not care a devil’s wit who caught them.

But such things were foolish, and he had not lost all sense entirely.

So, he had swept her into his arms, cradling her against his chest like a newly married man taking his bride over the threshold, and led her away from the long hall.

With each step, he’d feared his decision was a poor one.

Now, as he stood in his chamber, contemplating his massive, canopied bed, he tensed. Surely, this was a mistake. Surely, she could not. He could not take advantage—

As if she could read his thoughts, she whispered, “Do not doubt.”

And he realized that she was not giving in to him. She was not surrendering to him. He was not conquering her.

No, they were two souls meeting as one, both alive, both desperate for a larger life and more passion than either of them had ever dared to experience.

As he paused before the fire, he understood that she was not reticent. She was not afraid. She did not harbor doubts.

Oh no. She was the one who had instructed him that she wished this and… He wished it too. This was a remarkable moment, and he would not turn away from it.

Duncan felt almost certain that the universe had brought them together. For this spark of desire and hunger was undeniable.

So, when she turned towards him, her skirt swishing about her legs, caressing his boots and breech-covered thighs, he caught her in his arms and dragged her body to his.

She let out a gasp of shocked anticipation.

He marveled at the way her curves fit his hard sinew. He wanted all of her. He wanted to taste every line, every curve, every bit.

Bloody hell, he wanted to rip her gown right from her body and devour her with his eyes and let his hands roam over every hill and plain.

But he knew she’d never done this before. It was clear in the way she moved, untutored. Though she was full of need for him.

Slowly then, oh so slowly, he ran his fingers up her arms, trailed them over her shoulders, and came to the ties at her bodice. He tugged.

Her eyes widened as hot desire danced in them.

“I want you, lass. I want you with every fiber of my being.”

“And I you…” For the first time, she hesitated, her lips parting. “But I don’t understand exactly what that means.”

“Do you wish me to show you?” he asked softly, stroking his hand along her chin.

“You know I do,” she replied.

And with that, he bent his head and took her mouth in a passionate kiss.
