• If you like you can replace the canned tomatoes with 6 to 8 ripe plum tomatoes (or about 15 cherry tomatoes), blanched, peeled, and chopped.

• Try making meatballs from ground lamb or pork, or half pork and half beef.

• Adding 1 tablespoon of Parmesan cheese to the meatball mixture will give extra flavor.

Shepherd’s Pie

This is traditional family comfort food—perfect for cold winter evenings. Your baby will be able to manage this dish once he can open his fist on purpose and no longer needs to have sticks of food poking out. If he’s not quite there yet, serve it with sticks of steamed vegetables and let him have some of the shepherd’s pie to play with.

Serves 2 adults and 1 baby

1 pound starchy potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks

Approx. ½ cup milk

2 medium carrots, sliced

1 stick of celery, chopped

1½ cups lamb or vegetable stock (low-sodium or homemade, see pages 176–177)

Oil for frying

1 medium onion, finely chopped

10 ounces lean ground lamb

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon tomato paste

Splash of Worcestershire sauce (optional)

1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary or thyme (or 1 teaspoon dried rosemary or thyme)

½ cup frozen peas

2 tablespoons butter (preferably unsalted)

½ cup grated cheese (optional)

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
