Illustration of a woman with malaria, from a German publication on diseases, 1929.
In 1740, the English politician Horace Walpole wrote to a friend to explain why he had left Rome: ‘A horrid thing called mal’aria comes to Rome every summer and kills one.’
Centuries ago the links between the infection, marshy ground and a warm, damp climate were recognised. As with many epidemic diseases, though, the problem was thought to lie with foul smells – in this case the atmosphere of the swamps – hence the name ‘mala aria’, the Italian for ‘bad air’. It was also known as swamp fever, ague and Roman fever, the latter because, as Walpole noted, that city had a history of being plagued by the disease.
