Purchasing a few provisions, Crowley and Neuburg took a tram to Arba, where they had lunch before heading south. At this point, the men had no objective other than “renewing the austere rapture of sleeping on the ground and watching the stars”, as Crowley later reminisced in his auto-hagiography. They spent two nights sleeping in the open and another at a “hovel” struggling to pretend to be a hotel, before reaching Aumale on 21 November. Situated 120km (75 miles) southeast of Algiers, Aumale was an important gateway to the Sahara. Under Roman patronage, it had been a tourist destination where gazelles were hunted for sport and gladiators fought at its amphitheatre. Today the town honours that history with the name Sour El-Ghozlane, meaning “Rampart of the Gazelles”.
