Brooklyn

I BASK IN THE warmth emanating from the fire pit ahead of me. Its flames dance and reach for the sky each time a crisp breeze washes over us. The night sky above is clear and all the twinkling stars which are out highlight how beautiful the big white full moon is tonight.

Shura’s “White Light” floats from the iPod dock.

The dinner plates are already gone. All three of us possess stomachs which are full of the delectable dish Wynter had prepared and now we’re nursing our wine.

I wipe the tear which almost slips from my eye, one I haven’t been able to hold back since I’ve been sitting here while forcing myself to stop laughing. It’s clear with a woman like Mags around I don’t think it’s possible to stop laughing.

She’s a lot like Wynter but then she isn’t.

“Oh my god, so then there Wynter was angry as hell that I’d dented her beloved car.” Mags brushes her blonde strands away from her face. A long sigh drifts from her. “I seriously worried that she was going to kick my ass.” She takes a long sip of her red wine. “I mean, come on, it was just a car.”

“It was the car that Dad gave me, Mags, the one I still drive even now.”

I blink with realization that they’re both referring to the Chevy Wynter drives.

Mags’ lips press together. “I didn’t do it on purpose, it was just an accident.”

Wynter remains expressionless then takes a gulp of the wine from her glass then she glares at Mags.

“I mean, come on, Wynter, I’d just gotten my license. Mom and Dad wouldn’t let me drive their car.”

“For good reason.” Wynter sips more wine.

Mags tosses a palm up to the sky. “I was an overzealous teenager who wanted to be on the road with the wind in my hair, music blasting, fingers curled around the leather steering wheel. I wanted to be free, you know.” She squints. “I wanted to be on the road.” She laughs.

Wynter’s eyes fall shut for a beat. “I don’t know who on earth at the DMV even authorized that license.”

A laugh trickles from me.

Mags takes on a look of offense. “I got my license, Wynter, back then because I knew how to drive, I just wasn’t used to being behind the wheel alone.” Her voice becomes high-pitched.

I sit back in the lounge chair and breathe in the fresh night breeze and decide that even though the conversation has been quite odd and full of unresolved tension since I sat down with these two women, still, it’s been wonderful. They share a sisterly bond. They fight. They love. They resent. They get over it…

“I just wanted to drive.” Mags sighs.

“So, you stole my car, took it out for a spin, got in a fender bender then lied about it.”

Mags’ entire body moves with the sigh. “I’m sorry, Wynter.”

Wynter nods slowly, piercing Mags with the blue-eyed glare I’ve gotten so used to myself.

“It’s been years now.” Mags laughs. “And you’re still upset about it.
