RANKING HERBS FOR ARTHRITIS

Any attempt to select the best herbs for arthritis is a judgment call. Accordingly, we have divided the herbs into two categories—primary therapeutic herbs and secondary herbs. In particular, the primary therapeutic herbs can complement physical and mental therapies and may match or exceed the benefits and safety of standard synthetic drugs. For those who want to know more, detailed scientific summaries of research on the primary herbs can be found in Appendix C.

There are many other herbs that hold significant promise for arthritis but lack substantial scientific or historical backup. Some of these herbs are listed in Appendix B, with an indication of their biological properties and place in traditional healing systems. It should be said that in any individual case, one or more of the herbs listed in Appendix B might prove more effective than the ones featured in this chapter. We chose the ones covered here for the reasons stated, in an attempt to help medical consumers sort through the hundreds of possibilities.
