What Are the Obstacles to Compassion?

Compassion is a complex process that is influenced by a number of conscious and unconscious factors. Indeed, there are many examples in which psychological factors, beliefs, values, context, organizational culture, and societal forces have led to harm from lack of compassion (acts of omission) and hostility (acts of commission). In this chapter, I examine some of the obstacles that impede the flow of compassion in three directions: for others, from others, and from self (Figure 6.1). I also discuss the barriers to compassion that are unique in the healthcare environment.
