Three days later, before the sun had crested the mountain peaks but the sky was filled with light enough to see, buggies began to roll into Annie Gingerich’s yard. Among the first were that of the bishop and both the family buggy and spring wagon of the Millers from the Circle M.

Noah could hardly believe that the men and women of the district, who had barely met them, would respond like this to a call for help with hardly any notice. Or maybe, he thought humbly, it had nothing to do with the Kings at all, and everything to do with how well the Miller family were regarded in the Siksika Valley. But, as Rebecca had pointed out, it was most likely because they loved Annie Gingerich and wanted to see her back in her home. No matter why people had come, he and his family could only be grateful.

He’d spent the last three days since Rebecca’s confession out in the barn alternately trying not to think about it, and thinking about nothing else. For all intents and purposes, she was engaged … to a man she’d never even spoken to. Who would believe that?

But it was done, and she was prepared to undo it. And once she did, he had no doubt that she would be the center of such a storm of gossip as this beautiful valley had never seen.

Some might say she deserved it. But in his mind, better that than being engaged to Andrew. He was a lovable enough man on a good day—only those had been in short supply. The battle in his heart to live Amish or live Englisch had made him into two men, and a woman as gentle and pretty as Rebecca didn’t deserve a man with a divided heart.

And that wasn’t even counting this Englisch mystery woman who had left him for dead.

“Come on, Bruder, time to get to work.” Simeon clapped him on the back and Noah lurched into motion, abandoning his thoughts and fastening his leather carpenter’s belt about his hips, automatically making certain all his tools were in their places.

Simeon and Reuben Miller acted as foremen, dividing the volunteers into work crews. The old farmhouse had been emptied, the furniture moved out to the barn for the time being. Noah knew that in general, the floors of the house were pretty solid, made of oak planks darkened with time, and a good subfloor under them. But under the fifty-year-old linoleum of the kitchen, there had been some water damage from burst pipes and an old sink. A crew was formed to pull up and replace the flooring, and another to crawl under the house with headlamps to get started replacing the plumbing.

A third crew got busy on the soft spots on the wraparound porch that had so delighted his mother and sisters. Supports would have to be replaced as well as a few planks. The fourth crew focused on the walls, pulling off the old wallpaper-covered plywood and fitting bats of insulation between the studs before replacing it with new drywall.
