Chapter Fifteen
Lydia’s heart skipped slightly as she slid into the silk nightgown. When would he come for her, she wondered.
Sighing, she sat down close to the fire and waited.
What a few days it had been. The wedding, the night together, then arriving here at his home. Her home now, she realized. She had experienced a thousand emotion, many of them new and surprising.
Actually, in many ways, she was rather fortunate. How many women would wish to be in her place? A high title, a rich husband, servants, a beautiful home. In many ways, she had won at life. Yet, a troubling worry ate at her soul.
Reaching over, she pulled a shawl from the back of the other chair and wrapped it around her shoulders. The night was cold and although Mary had stoked the fire before leaving, the room held onto a cool nip.
Where was he? She wondered as she glanced at the door as a nervous energy washed through her. It would be nice to curl up against his warmth.
He knew that she had come upstairs to prepare herself.
Sighing, she retrieved a book from her dressing table and moved a candle to the side table next to her chair.
What did he think of her? Was he anticipating the night before them? Would he be as tender as he had been last night? She smiled to herself as she recalled the look in his eyes. The burning need that he had forced himself to restrain. All so that he could take the time to ensure things went well for her.
The animal lust had been kept under tight rein. Yet, a part of her had come alive when she saw that part of him. He could easily have taken. He was so large, so powerful. Yet he had cared enough to be tender.
It said that deep down, her husband was not a complete beast.
Sighing, she closed her book and looked out the window at a cold silver moon.
Where was he?
She frowned as a need began to build inside of her. An excitement of anticipation. The sudden feeling surprised her. Who would ever have believed she would look forward to joining with her husband.
The act, when it was talked about in whispered tones, had always been spoken of as something to tolerate. Something a wife did because it was expected of her.
Yet, that explosion at the end. She had never known such a thing existed. Did Ann know of this? Did other women?
Where was he? She thought again as she got up and began to pace. Surely he did not expect her to come to him. No, surely not.
Yet, what if that was what he expected.
Impossible, she thought as she flopped back into her seat. No, she would sit here until he came for her.
Sighing, she tried to read, when that didn’t work, she stared off into the distance. The constant ticking of the clock on the mantel reminding her of the time creeping away.
Where was he? The anger building inside of her forced her up out of the chair and across the room.
