Chapter 8 – The Epic Gilgamesh

Just under four thousand years ago, the legend of a hero emerged—that of a king, his epic adventures, a quest for immortality, and redemption for tyranny. Said to be one-third mortal and two-thirds divine, King Gilgamesh of Uruk (also known as Erech) was an imposing figure. He was glorious, manly, and kingly in stature, so much so that even a goddess fell in love with him at first sight.

The Epic of Gilgamesh was originally an oral story, passed down through generations by word of mouth. It’s unclear exactly when it started to be written down, but some historians believe that the Akkadians began to write it down during the height of their empire. The story is likely different from the original story as it was first told, as it would have changed to reflect the beliefs and values of the culture that wrote it.[53] The epic as we know it is decidedly Akkadian in its features.

Over time, the names of the gods and goddesses mentioned in the story changed as cultures shifted, but one name always remained the same—the hero of the story, King Gilgamesh.[54] This is his story.
