Infective endocarditis (IE) occurs relatively infrequently; it is estimated to affect 2 to 6 people per 100,000 person-years (Keys, 2014). IE is most likely to occur in patients with valvular heart disease or valvular replacement, or in intravenous drug abusers. An increasing number of cases are found among elderly patients with degenerative changes in their native heart valves. The incidence of IE associated with rheumatic heart disease has decreased in developed countries. Regardless of the cause, this disorder can lead to significant complications such as stroke, limb ischemia, and death. In-hospital mortality is high at 17.7% (Murdoch et al., 2009).
