Monday morning felt a long time in coming, but finally Kate pushed open the door to the Shooting Gallery and wondered where in the maze of corridors she was supposed to go. She needn’t have worried — a big blue arrow pointed the direction. But anyway she could hear the sound of chatter not far away.
She went along the corridor, past the room where she had tried on the clothes, and turned right. At the end of that corridor, she found herself in a room even bigger than the school gym. Her breath caught in her throat. She was standing in a real movie studio.
The space was huge; the ceiling was the same one she had seen in the costume room. From where she was now, she could see that the offices had been built right into one part of the studio. A metal grid was suspended from the ceiling with huge lights hanging from it. Several tall step–ladders were scattered here and there, tall enough for the crew to climb and reach the lights, probably so they could adjust them, Kate guessed. People were standing in groups, talking, pointing occasionally, nodding. All the kids were together in one group, and Kate went over to join them.
“Isn’t this cool, guys?” she said, as she came up to them. “Imagine, being in a real studio!”
Natalie grinned. “I know,” she said, excitedly. Tawny and Aimee just gave her a look as if they’d been in and out of studios all their lives, though Kate knew that they hadn’t.
“All right, people, listen up!” It was Denise, today in jeans and an oversized red T–shirt, but still with the tiger–eye pendant. As she touched the pendant briefly, Kate noticed that Denise’s nails, while still short, didn’t look quite as chewed.
Denise introduced the members of the crew that the kids had not already met and then explained what was to happen that day.
“We are going to go through the script scene by scene and work out exactly how it will be filmed. It will take a long time, so please be patient. When you are not in a scene, I’d appreciate it if you’d go to the green room, so that we’re not distracted. There’s juice and muffins there, and coffee and stuff, help yourselves. We’ll start with scene one …”
Kate was not in scene one, so Kirk took her and the others who weren’t needed to the green room. Kate was surprised that it was actually white, not green. There were a couple of old couches and armchairs, plus a table with wooden chairs. On shelves, some dog–eared books were piled neatly, as well as games of Clue, Trivial Pursuit, and a couple of others. Along one wall was a sink, microwave, coffee maker, a tray of juices, and a tray of muffins. But nothing was green.
Kate grabbed a banana muffin, and bounced down next to Natalie on a sofa. “Why do you suppose they call it the green room if it’s not green?”
“Beats me,” Natalie replied.
