MY INCREDIBLE DISAPPEARING MAGIC

At lunch, I decided to fill my glass with water without leaving the table.

“Watch this,” I said to Jennifer, who was sitting opposite me.

I snapped my fingers. My glass filled with water.

I smiled triumphantly. “You see, Jennifer. That is how a witch does it.”

“A who does what?” Jennifer said.

“Don’t pretend you don’t know.” I lifted the glass to my lips. It was empty.

“You’re drinking air!” Jennifer screeched.

Then Andelica’s words came back to me: “Today’s magic will have no results.”

“Mmm,” I said, thinking fast. “Fresh air. Delicious drink.”

“Bee, you are getting weirder all the time.” Jennifer picked up her tray and set it down at Mandy’s table.

Then there was gym class.

“Up the ropes we go,” the gym teacher said, as I walked into the gymnasium.

Just my luck. The ropes. I could never get past the knot at the bottom.

“Hey, Stumble Bee,” Mandy called. She was practically on the ceiling. The Apples were oohing and aahing. “Come on up. The view is fine.”

“No thanks.” I wished we were doing something nice and safe—like square dancing or miniature golf.

“Are you afraid?”

The Apples tittered.

“Of course not.”

“She’s afraid,” Mandy said. She hung by one hand.

Show-off.

I would show her.

I ran to the rope. My powers were fizzing inside me. I felt like root beer in a can that someone had shaken hard.

Usually the rope burned the palms of my hands and my fingers. But today it felt like velvet.

My arms and legs gripped the rope, and up I whizzed, easy as could be, until I was directly across from Mandy.

“Hey, Mandy. The view is fine.” I tried not to think about how high I was or how hard the shiny wooden floor below.

Mandy gaped.

Then I slid down, easy as could be.

I looked up at her. “You see?”

“See what?” She thumbed her nose at me.

“Up the ropes we go,” the gym teacher said. “Just give it a try, Phoebe.”

“But I did!”

“Now, now, Phoebe, you can try a little harder than that. One of these days you’ll make it up a foot or two,” she said encouragingly.

The memory of your spells will fade in the minds of those who witness them.…

Oh, well. At least I remembered. Andelica hadn’t wiped out my memory.

After school, I waited around for Jennifer, but she never showed up.

I was halfway home when Peter Cook caught up with me. “Hi, Bee,” he said.

“Hi, Peter.”

“Going home?”

“Uh-huh,” I said. “Are you?”

“Uh-huh.”

We stared at each other.

“Strange,” he said, at last.

“What?”

“School today.”

“School today was strange?”

He nodded. “Definitely.”

“Definitely?”

“My clothes smell like bubble bath. I can’t figure out why. For some reason, I thought you might have something to do with it, Phoebe.”

I was so surprised I crashed into him. Hadn’t Andelica’s spell erased his memory?

“You just stepped on my toes,” Peter said.

“Oh! Sorry.”

“That’s okay. It’s just toes.” He sniffed the sleeve of his shirt. “Bubble bath. Definitely,” he repeated.

“Well, as a matter of fact—,” I began.

Just then a bus roared past, filled with witches pointing their fingers at us.

“Did you see that?” I said.

“What?” Peter said.

“That bus.
