Biloxi has been known for its casinos since the 1940s. The Gulf Coast here is often called the “Poor Man’s Riviera.”

The years following the war saw deep racial divisions and persecution of black people, which led to the Great Migration, in which hundreds of thousands of Mississippi’s African-Americans left the state in search of better lives beyond the Deep South. With them went their music, which took root in cities like Chicago and Detroit.

Prior to the Great Migration, Mississippi was a black majority state. Today the black sector of the population amounts to a little over one third, still living mostly in the Delta.

THE KING OF ROCK AND ROLL

Elvis Presley was born on January 8, 1935 in a shotgun shack in the northern Mississippi town of Tupelo, and lived there until the age of 13. Influenced by the blues, gospel, and country music of his native state, he became the world’s most famous rock and roll singer, selling over 2.5 billion records worldwide— more than any other artist. He died on August 16, 1977, aged just 42.
