The Four Pillars
There are some core principles that should always be part of a well-rounded fitness practice. I call them the four pillars: strength, flexibility, endurance, and vitality. You might remember those same four pillars from when we were discussing mental and emotional fitness in earlier chapters. Fitness is fitness, mind and bodyâitâs all connected. As long as your physical training incorporates a range of activities that exercise those same four pillars in your rotation, youâll have a solid regimen.
You may find a sport or activity that does it all for you. Dancing, swimming, and surfing come to mind as possible one-stop-shops that incorporate all four pillars, but thereâs no limit to all the training modalities and fitness activities you can explore to exercise one or more of the pillars.
You can hit the weights or do calisthenics for strength training.
Yoga, Pilates, and stretching are great practices for flexibility.
Distance running, jumping rope, and sparring are a few of many ways to work on endurance.
Qigong, yoga, and pranayama are good examples of vitality exercises that emphasize internal energy development and deep mindful breathing to support the longevity of your inner body and organ systems.
Today, I still strive to do a range of exercises in my personal workout routines that touch on strength, flexibility, endurance, and vitality year-round. This way, Iâm free to customize my workout and mix things up and avoid too much monotony. I know by incorporating some strength training, both lifting weights and body-weight exercises, some endurance work, some stretching for flexibility, and some qigong and breath work mixed in there, my fitness practice is covering all the fundamental bases.
The intense focus of the martial-arts lifestyle fit my personality well and I think thatâs why it was so fulfilling for me over the decade of practice I put in. It provided practical training for self-defense, which I value. The calisthenics, stretching, and sparring improved my strength, flexibility, and endurance and the cultural and philosophical insights fed my vital need to keep learning and growing as a person. Martial arts and working out in general have meant so much in my life.
