They were finished and he’d made an ass of himself. Nothing unusual about that.

She wasn’t angry with him. She was angry because she actually was a sheep. She’d never once stopped to consider whether or not rules had any worth or foundation; she simply adhered to them because that was what she was supposed to do. She was a sheep.

A foolish sheep.

He sat across from her and said nothing. The carriage rolled along steadily, heading for her house, where he was to drop her off. She had wanted to ask him today if he were planning to attend Meg’s masque ball, but the moment had passed. Now the air sat saturated with awkwardness.

It mattered not anyway if he were planning to attend. She was going to celebrate with her friends and try to catch a thief. It was rather disgraceful that the thought of him seeing her in her beautiful gown excited her. She’d run a scenario over and over in her mind about what it would be like when he first realized it was she. His eyes would roam down the length of her, then settle on the bodice that was entirely too low cut. And he’d shamefully admire her voluptuous bosom.

“You can’t possibly be thinking about following rules with a blush like that on your cheeks,” he said. The deep rumble of his voice washed over her skin like warm water.

He was smiling at her. That seductive smile with those dimples of his. Her heart seemed as if it had chugged to a stop. Good heavens, but he was so dashing. How was it possible that a girl such as herself could warrant such a smile from such a man?

He was a wolf, teasing and taunting women. She knew that. It had nothing to do with her. Still, part of her wanted to hope that it did. If only a little bit. Just a fragment of him wanting to smile just at her.

She put her hand up to her cheek. “I’m just warm,” she managed to say.

His brow shot up. “In this weather? It’s damned chilly out.”

“Perhaps I’m coming down with something.” She was a terrible liar. They both knew that. No doubt he could see right through her.

The carriage rolled to a stop and she leaned forward to open the door, but he caught her wrist.

“I shouldn’t do this…” His words trailed off and he pulled her to him. She fell onto his lap and he brought his lips down on hers in a hungry kiss. Her eyes fluttered closed and she tried to remind herself that this was a very bad idea, but she, the she on the inside, wasn’t listening. Instead she was just kissing and very much enjoying being kissed.

He released her abruptly. “Believe it or not,” he said. “That’s a rule I’ve been desperately trying to keep as I know I shouldn’t toy with you. But damnation, woman, you make it hard for me to keep my hands off of you.” And with that he opened the door.
