CHAPTER 25

“Caleb, your room is beyond gross.” Mariah lifted one of her older brother’s sweat-stained T-shirts from a chair. “No wonder Little Bluehair made a run for it.” Letting the shirt drop from her fingers, she gazed at the empty silver hamster cage which lay half hidden behind a set of drums.

“The stench of unwashed teenage boy?” She tried the story out. “Desperate for fresh air, tiny Bluehair pried open the cage door with her bare hands, and ran, ran for her life…”

“Go ahead, make fun of me,” Caleb said, scratching his chest.

“I’m kidding,” Mariah assured him. “Well, sort of. But seriously, I can’t figure how it got out. Mom wouldn’t have done it, she never comes in here. That’s why we picked your room in the first place. And even if she had, we would’ve heard about it by now.”

“I’ll say.”

“And besides, I know I had that cage locked. I don’t suppose you saw anything…”

“Blame me if you want, but those two in your backpack got away, too. Must’ve been all those open tubes of lip gloss and armpit glitter at the bottom. Or maybe they got sick of looking at the leftover pizza in your braces.”

Mariah smoothed her brown hair. “You’ll make some woman a fine husband some day.”

“Thank you.”

Mariah decided to change the subject. “I wonder where they are? Do you think they’re still in the house?”

Caleb frowned as an unsettling thought occurred to him. “Maybe Secret killed them. He’s been known to go after mice.” He looked over at the small black dog which lay napping between them. “Secret, did you eat my biology project? Did you gobble up my easy A?”

“Oh, I hope not!” Taking her pet’s face in her hands, Mariah searched its sleepy black eyes. “Nope, he’s innocent.” She gave Secret’s fluffy ear a kiss, then turned back to her brother. “Forget about biology projects! Promise me you won’t ever take one of those little creatures to school, or show them to anyone.”

“I promise nothing.”

“Caleb, please. Because I’m starting to think maybe I shouldn’t have taken them in the first place. I found little Bluehair one day when I went with Mom to the site of a new development. We parked in this big field full of dandelions. I was walking around while Mom was talking to someone, when all of a sudden I was like, what is that? It was just sitting there on this giant rock next to some bushes and stuff, looking up at me. I guess it was too scared to run. I could see it wasn’t an animal, I mean it was wearing clothes for crying out loud. So what could I do but take it?”

“So that’s why you were acting so weird that day.”

“I know I should have told you. I felt weird about it even then, like I had interfered with something I shouldn’t have. Then I looked up and there in a tree was this big brown bird, some kind of eagle or something, giving me a mean look.
