Finally, using other papers, the students cut out a shape; it can be any design, but they must cut four that are identical. Some kids cut out abstract shapes, and hearts, leaves, and stars are also quite popular, but anything goes. If the students have chosen the same color paper for their four-by-four-inch squares, the papers for the cutouts are all different colors. If the smaller squares are different colors, the cutouts are all the same color.

It’s okay to use construction paper, but I have found that using origami paper makes these creations more vibrant. In any event, once the four squares are mounted, the kids will be fascinated to observe the optical illusions created by the different colors. Though the young artists know the shapes are all identical in size, their various colors alter the appearance. Thus, in this simple project, kids learn the effect of color, they learn about a great artist, and they learn that we do not create and explore the world of art for profit or fame. We create for the same reason we breathe—we need to.
