CHAPTER NINE

After leaving the magazine, Mia decided that she could not go back to Kane’s place to tell him anything. How was she supposed to face the man she was madly in love with and tell him she had lied to him? As she rode the elevator down to the lobby, tears began to leak out of her eyes. She could already see the hurt that would soon be emanating from him and there was no way she could deal with that at the moment. Reaching for her cell phone, she dialed the only number of the one person who could understand how she was feeling.

“I’m happy you called,” said Marlo minutes later when Mia arrived at her coffee shop. She set a steaming cup of Vanilla Chamomile tea in front of her little sister.

“Me too.” Mia sighed into her cup and watched as her sister sat adjacent to her in the cozy breakfast nook.

“What are you going to do?”

Mia shrugged. “It’s not like I really have a choice in this situation. I told Tinley off and I quit.”

“That’s great and all but now you have to tell Kane.”

“See? That’s my dilemma. I can’t do it.”

“Why not? Wouldn’t you rather he hear it from you instead of reading about it first hand?”

“I tell him and that ruins us. Do you hear me? Ruined, Marlo.”

“Sweetie, it’s already kind of ruined if you think about it.”

“Thanks a lot.”

Marlo shrugged. “I’m just saying. I hate to bust your balls sis, but I wish you would have been honest from the beginning, then you could have gotten to know the real Kane without all this extra drama you’ve created.”

Mia touched her chest astonished. “Wait a minute? Drama I created?” She wanted to make sure she heard her sister correctly.

Marlo nodded. “Yes. Oh, come on sis, you know you didn’t have to take Tinley up on her offer.”

“How else was I supposed to advance at the magazine?”

“You’re not even there anymore.”

Mia wrung her hands together. “I have made a mess of things, haven’t I?”

Marlo nodded. “You have, but I believe you all will be able to work things out. You need to tell him, rather than let him read all about it though.”

Mia nodded, “I know.”

“Hey, are you hungry?” Marlo stood switching gears. She was tired of badgering her sister; she did not want to make her feel any worse than what she was feeling

“Yeah.” Mia nodded hopping to her feet. “What you got to eat?”

“I was thinking we could whip something up together.” Marlo gave her sister a soft bump with her hip and they began preparing their meal.

Following a nice meal of stuffed chicken breast, cabbage and mashed potatoes, Mia promised her sister she would call Kane and let him know what was going on, but the moment she got in the house and picked up her cell to dial him, she chickened out and stayed holed up in her apartment for the next forty-eight hours.
