Charlie set his plate down across from his brother. "What did you say to Miss Ayres?"
Robert only paused briefly in spooning up his soft boiled egg. "Shall I recount all the conversations I've had with the two Miss Ayres since I've been here so that you can tell me which thing offended you?"
If he thought it a bluff, Charlie would say yes, but he knew his brother had a formidable memory. Further, once challenged, Robert would insist on proving he remembered each conversation almost precisely. "Charlotte said you thought she was lucky that I offered for her."
That served to make Robert stop eating altogether and stare off to the corner of the ceiling as he thought. "I didn't say that, so it is interesting to me that she derived it."
"It's possible the accident addled her senses," Charlie muttered. "She also said that you adored me."
Robert wasn't much given to laughter, but that wrangled a surprised guffaw and entertained smile. "I wouldn't have put it that way, but she's right, of course."
Charlie frowned. "What do you mean she's right? That's ridiculous."
His brother's expression became characteristically blank upon being challenged. "Oh? And how do you suspect I feel about you?"
"Again, you talking about feelings is unsettling. But I've always known how you feel about me. I'm an irritating responsibility, but also useful. Not that you would spend much time dwelling on it."
"You must know that I love you, Charlie."
Charlie dug out extra marmalade for his crumpet. "Of course I do. I tried to warn your wife about the responsibility of being loved by you, and the fool girl married you anyway. But adoration? The shading on that word is far too light. It infers an approval, a liking and like-mindedness that we've never shared."
Charlie realized his brother was still staring at him blankly and decided to turn his attention to his breakfast plate.
