Conclusion

Race talk is significant to Trena’s patrons in at least three ways. First, patrons’ stories of racism or discrimination heighten the other patrons’ awareness of negative racial experiences. By sharing stories of racial conflict, patrons develop a collective memory of racism and discrimination that is broadened with each additional story told. Second, in retelling stories of racial conflict, patrons are able to reframe the events in such a way that they emerge victorious. They can relive a negative racial experience and enjoy the added twist of having triumphed even though this might not have actually been the case in the original encounter. Third, patrons are able to highlight the diversity of African Americans’ views by making intragroup distinctions in their race group introspection. They can realize a self-identity that goes beyond race. This talk, occurring in racially homogeneous social settings, helps shape the way individuals think about race and the outside world, a notion taken up in greater depth in the concluding chapter.
