I’m writing this in 2014, and I should note for the smattering of cisgender readers who will buy this anthology that It Gets Better or whatever and that a lot of these fears seem abstract, toxic, and needless to me now. And even though I’ve changed in this regard since 2010–11, so has the world in fairly complicated ways, not least of which is HR sensitivity to—or even basic awareness of—the possibility of trans women in the workplace. And it bears mentioning that a close friend of mine was just told, this very summer of 2014, that she would not be receiving health insurance from her job at a well-known NYC university entirely because she’s trans. All is complicity.
