Mészáros’s companies first appeared on the stock market in 2017, not in the traditional manner, by issuing shares or through his buying up valuable companies, but in a rather ‘unorthodox’ way. Mészáros would buy a share in an ailing company, for a much higher price than its condition warranted, and after that the share price of the company mysteriously began to rise significantly. Investors in the stock market looked on astonished. The secret behind this ‘unorthodox’ arrangement was simple: the companies become valuable not through traditional growth, but because of the participation of a man close to the prime minister.⁵⁷ In 2022 it was not yet clear whether these companies, which were overly dependent on the state, would be able to prove themselves in a competitive market.
