Self-Harm

In both adolescents and adults, CBT reduces suicidal and self-harm behaviors. A meta-analysis was conducted on the pooled data in 14 CBT studies for adolescent self-harm behaviors. Pretreatment to posttreatment results indicated a significant reduction in suicidal ideation (d = 0.40) and self-harm (d = 0.27; Labelle et al., 2015). Similar results were obtained for self-harm in adults (Hawton et al., 2016). These medium-sized statistical effects represent clinically significant improvements for one of the leading, and most tragic, causes of death in the world.

Domestic Violence Lest we be accused of presenting only favorable reviews of cognitive therapy’s effectiveness, we will mention the sobering results of a meta-analytic review of 22 studies evaluating the treatment efficacy for domestically violent men (Babcock et al., 2004). Overall, treatment effects on batterers were in the small range, meaning that current treatments have a minimal impact on reducing recidivism beyond the effect of being arrested. There were no differences in effect sizes between CBT and other psychotherapies; none were particularly effective for this refractory population (Smedslund et al., 2009).
