NOTES ON SPONSORSHIP

The M+1 is sometimes called a sponsoring manager to emphasise the accountability for development.

While something like sponsorship goes on in many organisations, it is often done only for a favoured few, and it frequently carries implications of power. A manager knows they are in favour because ‘their people’ get promoted. In some organisations there is continuing gossip about the various power groups as higher level executives compete to get their people promoted into key positions. This drains productive energy from the work of the organisation, and it also means that many talented people may never get noticed because they are excluded from the power system.

A system of clear authority for the M+1 reduces these problems, and ensures that everyone in the organisation gets fair consideration from someone who should be able to discern developing capability from their position one step above the person’s manager.

The authority to veto selection goes up through the entire hierarchy, though obviously it is rarely exercised by M+2 and above – see Figure 12.3. Nonetheless, the authority reflects a reality of organisation life, that someone high in the organisation may have knowledge and good reason for vetoing the selection of a person to the organisation.
